Runnerd, Geek Out! – Books

I’m one of those people who likes to do research. I research products before I need to buy something big. For example, I drove my husband crazy trying to figure out which vacuum I wanted to get to replace our dead Dyson.

When I started to get really serious about running, I figured there were probably some great books out there. These are my four go-tos for any questions I have or if I want a new training plan to inspire me and get me going.

Run Like a Mother

If you are a mom and a runner, you NEED to read this book. There is a tribe out there for mother runners, and it is the best community in the world as far as I am concerned. When I started running, I felt a bit alone. I don’t have a regular running partner, so 95% of my runs are done solo. However, when I know I have the two amazing women who wrote this book and all of their fellow tribe members behind me, I have that much more get-up-and-go to get my runs done and done well. Check out their website as well. They have Facebook, twitter, and instagram as well. Immerse yourself in the mother runner world! You’ll never want to leave!

Train Like a Mother

Just as awesome as their first book. I LOVE these plans. If you are a new runner, they will get you started. And if you are like me…not quite a beginner, not quite a novice…they will get to the serious level where you feel like a real runner, a real athlete. I used their 5K-Own It plan with great success and am in week 9? 10? of their Half Marathon Finish It plan. I HIGHLY recommend these plans. They have a bit more umph to them than many of the plans out there on the internet.

Kara Goucher’s Running for Women

I want Kara’s job. She runs for a living. How cool would that be! Her book inspired me in ways I didn’t think was possible. She’s a world class athlete…the big time. She’s competitively runs marathons I could only dream of qualifying for. She’s the real deal. And yet, she’s a mom and a wife, and she’s down to earth. My library owns a copy of this book so I have yet to buy my own. I’m pretty sure I check it out three or four times a year just to reskim and reabsorb the goodness of it.

The Run-Walk-Run Method

This is at the top of my run supplies need list. I really want my own copy. I was soooo skeptical of this method. I was worried it would make me feel like less of a runner. I was worried what other people would think…that they wouldn’t see me as a real runner. Then I tried it. And now I’m hooked. I lowered my easy run pace from a 11:30min/mile to a 10:30min/mile. I use a 4:1 ratio…running for 4 minutes and walking for 1. And the walk is not a leisurely walk. I’m power walking at a 13-14min/mile pace. I don’t feel completely wiped out after my long runs. Don’t get me wrong…I’m definitely tired, but I can still go about the rest of my day. I encourage any newer runner who is considering a first half marathon to check this out!

So there you have it. My four must reads for any new-ish runner!

Weekly Wishes #3

Last Week’s Wishes…

  • HAIRCUT!
  • BLOG!
  • Call and schedule doctor appointments for the boys. Every year I drag my feet more and more. I don’t even think they need shots this year.
  • Ride my bike. We replaced our bike rack that someone stole half of off my car last fall. I need to pick one of the days that Blue has school and bring my bike in even for just a little 10mi ride. If not this week, then definitely next week. Cross training does the body good!

NOPE! I got none of these done. The only accomplishment I made in reference to these wishes is that I brought Sexy into the house and put her outside pedals on. I’m clutsy and still can’t handle clipless pedals. Good thing I’m a runner, because I’d make a terrible triathlete.

This Week’s Wishes…

  • HAIRCUT!

  • Call and schedule doctor appointments for the boys.
  • Mentally prepare myself for the half-marathon taper. It’s coming. 12 mile run tomorrow and then nothing over 8 until May 4th.
  • Win the April spending challenge my husband made with me. Whoever can spend the least amount on extras (Groceries and necessary household items don’t count. Eating out does!) gets a reward that we request of the other (dishes for a week, a run date…something non-monetary for the other). We have written our requests and put them inside sealed envelopes. I’m curious to know what his request is!

Weekly Wishes #2

Maybe I should call this biweekly wishes. Ugh. I blog for a week and then I take a break. Blog for a week. Take a break. Eventually I’ll blog every week, right? Wishful thinking? Who knows!

Last Week’s Wishes (Errr…two week’s ago wishes…)

  • Create an allowance chart for the boys. They’ve been begging for an allowance and I think it’s time. We figured we would make a chart and they could each earn a maximum of $2.50 each week for doing their regular chores. Of course, I reminded both of them that if we start this, it means the end to small treats here and there at the store. They will have to buy their own little treats from now on.DONE! I need to do a blog post on this. We’ve been using it for two weeks and it’s great!
  • Make a Frozen ringtone for my phone. I use this tutorial that I found on Pinterest to make a ringtone from my favorite song snippet. I am obsessed with Let It Go…just like every other mom on the planet. :)When my phone rings, every child within a 20 foot radius swivels their heads wildly, looking for Elsa. I secretly LOVE this.
  • Spending freeze! It’s Spring Break so this will be TOUGH. I am not allowing myself to buy anything other than food or other household necessities.Umm…I’m going to call this a 50% victory. We didn’t eat out during the week for the two weeks, and I didn’t buy any running clothes. But we did make one major purchase. I’ll get to that in another blog post.
  • Read two books. I’m so far behind on my 75 books for the year challenge.I read Bite-Sized Magic by Kathryn Littlewood. It’s the third in a J fiction series about a family that runs a magic bakery. So fun. I also read I Even Funnier by James Patterson. I really enjoy James Patterson’s young adult books, even though I’m curious exactly how involved he actually is in writing these books. This week I’ve already read Grasshopper Jungle by Andrew Smith. The synopsis turned me off immediately, but then the book started popping up on top read lists. It surprised me and I found that I really enjoyed it. Definitely a fresh twist on dystopian teen fiction. I’m currently reading Philippa Gregory’s Changeling, which is first in her young adult series, Order of Darkness. I enjoy her adult fiction, so it’s no surprised I’m liking this one so far.
  • Call and schedule a haircut for myself. Oh man…the mop is getting a bit unruly!NOPE! This needs to happen soon! My hair can reach my mouth, which is not good with this KS wind we’ve been having. I was enjoying not having hair stick to my lipgloss!
  • Take the boys and their bikes to the park. I have been promising them this FOREVER. It’s time mama made good on her promise.I took the boys to the park, but not the bikes. Partial win.
  • Heal my shin splints. My 10 mile run caused a bit of damage. My left shin is tender and sore. Walking and elliptical until Thursday when I’ll do a slow test run. Fingers crossed I can still get my big 12 mile run this coming Friday.I had a good week of running two weeks ago, but last week was a challenge and this week doesn’t seem to be starting off much better. My form is off. And I seem to be fighting off some sort of pancreatitis or minor gall bladder attack.

Not-So-Wordless Wednesday

Brown and Blue: The elephant poop!

Blue: What are you watching?
Me: Star Trek Into Darkness
Blue: I don’t even know what that is. And it’s weird.

Blue opens a birthday present and it’s a pack of two telescoping pens, just like the ones they are always borrowing from their great-grandpa.
Brown: That’s not a present! That’s office supplies!

Blue: I want to go to DisneyLand and DisneyWorld someday, but I think they should build a Disney Universe here in Wichita. That would be awesome. Like Glove Universe on Spongebob.

Blue sees a Frozen on DVD commercial and loses his marbles.
Me: I thought you were too cool for princess-y stuff now.
Blue: Frozen isn’t princess-y, Mom! It’s sister-y!!

Consumer Mom Tuesday – My Make-Up!

Today on Consumer Mom Tuesday we are going to talk about something that most women enjoy…MAKE-UP! My love affair with make-up has been very on again off again my entire life. I was drawn to it as a teenager and thanks to a Mary Kay lady for a mom I had a lot of help learning how to wear it correctly. In high school, I wore it for fun from time to time. In college, I didn’t bother with it, outside of mascara and the occasional full face for a fun event. As a young mom, I didn’t have time. It wasn’t until after Blue was born that I started wearing it regularly.

I’ve tried lots of different brands and different formulations through the years. I’ve used liquid foundation, cream to powder foundation, and mineral powder foundation. I’ve messed around with eye liner and bronzer. After a lot of trial and error, I settled on my current routine. So here it is, my daily make-up routine for the active mom who likes to look polished, yet natural.

A good make-up routine starts with a good skin care routine. Since having the boys and starting running, I have developed some adult acne, especially on my forehead and chin. I tried over-the-counter acne creams and cleansers with little success. My mom suggested I try out Mary Kay’s new Clear Proof line. It cleared my face up within a week! I’ve never had anything work so well.

So my routine starts in the shower with the Clear Proof Clarifying Cleansing Gel, which I didn’t take a picture of because it’s in my shower. But here’s my naked before face.

I start by spot treating my t-zone with the Clear Proof Pore-Purifying Serum. I also put a small amount of Clear Proof Oil-Free Moisturizer on my cheeks, because my skin is ridiculous and combination. My t-zone is as oily as an awesome cheeseburger and my cheeks are as dry as dried minced onions. Yeah…we had burgers for dinner the night I wrote this post…can you tell?

Then I apply Mary Kay’s new CC Cream, blending it over my whole face. It’s AWESOME. I’ve tried tinted moisturizers in the past, but the texture was always off and the coverage wasn’t quite enough. CC Cream is the best of both worlds. It’s so smooth and gives just enough coverage to cover my blotchiness and uneven skin tone spots. AND it has broad spectrum SPF15.

Then comes my favorite part…eye make-up! I never perfected eyeliner, so about six months ago I finally gave up. Instead I switched to eye crayons. Mary Kay’s @Play line is excellent. I have almost every shade they’ve ever made. My current favorite is the new Teal Me More. I put a thick line on my upper lid at the lash line and a small smudge line in the outer corner of my bottom lash line. A swipe of mascara on my top lashes, and my eyes are done. I’ve used Maybelline classic mascara FOREVER. It’s my favorite stuff. I switch my mascara out every four months and I can stock up on Maybelline with coupons. Plus, they make my favorite shade…brownish black.

My blush routine is new…ok, very new. I just got this stuff (Maybelline Master Glaze Blush Stick) last Monday, but I am hooked. I love any kind of make-up that resembles a crayon. No brushes to keep track of and clean weekly. I put a swipe on each cheek, like a football player, and then smudge it with my fingers.

I’m a lip gloss lover, so I have oodles of it. I have just about every shade of Maybelline BabyLips, every flavor of EOS, and a couple Mary Kay lipglosses. This is my current favorite. I finally tracked it down at Walgreens. The tiny little mini tub is SOOOO CUTE! Vaseline Lip Therapy Rosy Lips…get some!

And now here’s the final product! It probably takes me less time to apply it all than it did for you to read this post. I feel pretty when I have my face done like this. Now that I’ve regularly been doing my make-up, I feel naked when I forget it. Oh the trials of being a woman/girl!

Since I don’t have any “last week’s wishes” to update on. Here’s my goals and challenges for this week.

Musings of a Mother Runner

I know Friday is supposed to be a post about something relaxing, but I’ve got running on the mind. Why?

Because I ran TEN miles this morning. TEN. Double digits. Woah.

People ask me all the time why I run. Have I ever done a post about that? I can’t remember. I know I planned to. But yeah…I run for lots of reasons. I run to stay in shape. I run so I eat. I REALLY like food. I run for my own sanity. I run to get away from my to-do list. I run to take a break from my kids.

But I also run for my people. It takes a village to raise kids, and it takes a village to support a mother runner. My mom watched Brown this morning who started spring break today so I could get my ten miles in. I love my people. I have a close family, which I’ve talked about before. My VIPs would be my husband, my kids, my mom, my dad, my two sets of grandparents, my brother, my aunts, my inlaws, and my brother-in-law and sister-in-law. They all keep me going. I think about them a lot on my runs.

I realized this morning as I was going through the motions of TEN miles that my runs are supported by them. Nearly all of my gear has been bought by them.

My husband got me the running top I ran today for Valentine’s Day. He also ordered me a whole box of my favorite Honey Stinger cherry cola energy chews that kept me going. My sons picked out my socks for me for Valentine’s Day. My mom and dad gave me my hydration belt for Christmas. My inlaws gave me my shoes for Christmas. My aunts gave me my iPod Shuffle for Christmas. My Mema and Pa gave me my Garmin for Christmas. My Jidi and Gma gave me the birthday money that I used to guy my Tifosi sunglasses.

They are all with me when I run. I owe a chunk of my success as a runner to them.

So thanks to my village. I couldn’t run without you!
